Meet Our Team
Mathew Clarke - Chairman
I have been a member of STCo for 10 years, and what a decade it has been. It started out as rediscovering a passion that I had as a child, and rekindled during university. Both times ‘Fame’ was the draw – it was the first show I ever saw on the West End, and then was the first proper musical I ever performed in… but ‘Fame’’s impact doesn’t stop there, as it was then the show with STCo where I met my now-wife Helen who played opposite my character Nick, as Serena in the show! It’s hard to decide on my favourite show as they’re neck and neck! I cannot choose between Notebook the Musical, or Waitress the Musical, though my dream role would be Dr Pomatter from Waitress!
Outside of STCo, I have also performed in Shrek and Sister Act with Teeside Musical Theatre Company, and away from musicals all together, I work as a Head of House, and Teacher of Spanish, French and Business Studies in Gateshead.
It truly is an honour to be Chairman here at STCo and have been so since 2021. We regard STCo as a family, and I am incredibly proud of the close-knit, sensationally talented group we have, and how welcoming we are to any new members

I started performing with Sunderland Theatre Company at the age of 7, joining as an adult member at 12 years old. My mam, who was already a member, took me along with my sister and it was from there that I found my love of musicals. I remember seeing my mam perform on stage and watching musicals at home and at my grandparents’, knowing I wanted to be in one! Outside of STCo I work as a primary School teacher and have the pleasure of raising my beautiful daughter with my husband. My favourite musical is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, however after discovering Legally Blonde a few years ago this is definitely joint top! I was honoured to take on the role of Elle Woods in 2023 with the company, which had swiftly become by ultimate dream role and it will be something I remember forever.

I’ve been a part of STCo since 2016. My love of theatre started when I was apart of Little Shop of Horrors in High School. My favourite show is Six, but you’ll always find me behind the scenes.

I’ve been with STCo since July 2023. I have always had a love for musical theatre starting from a young age and this was truly ignited when I performed in my first musical aged 11. Since then, I have performed in various musicals throughout my childhood such as Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You and I have continued this passion well into my adulthood, where I was part of Starlight Theatre Company before I found my theatre Family in STCo. I find performing on stage alongside incredibly talented people so exhilarating and it is an escapism from the stresses that every day life can bring. In my daily job, I work as an Anaesthetic and Recovery Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) at Spire Healthcare based in a hospital in Washington, Tyne and Wear (so it’s always the running joke of Theatre by Day and Theatre by Night). It’s hard to choose a favourite musical as there are so many fantastic ones out there, but I would definitely say that The Lion King and Prince of Egypt are in the top spots. My favourite role that I’ve portrayed has got to be Mother Superior in STCo’s production of Sister Act in May 2025.

I’ve now been a part of STCo for over 6 years (it has absolutely flown)! My love of theatre has always been a part of me and it’s thanks to my mum really – she took me to Newcastle, Sunderland, and London from a really early age fostering an adoration for the arts. Outside of STCo I work as a Head of Year in a high school. My favourite show is ‘Miss Saigon’ – the music is beautiful and who doesn’t love a helicopter? My favourite role has absolutely been ‘Deloris’ in our 2025 production of Sister Act, she’ll forever have a piece of my soul.

I have been a member for nearly a year, and what a life changing year it’s been. My love for theatre started when I was around 4 and I would watch Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat and Oklahoma on repeat, much to the annoyance of the rest of my family! I then spent my school years in Starset Theatre Company and with Harton Technology College’s music department, playing roles such as Rizzo (Grease), Oz (We Will Rock You) and Ronette (Little Shop of Horrors). My favourite musical of all time is ‘Blood Brothers’ – having seen it 14 times over the last 18 years, I think I would be classed as a super fan! Theatre often allows you to become fast friends with those you share a stage with, but at STCo these connections go beyond the shows, the bright lights and frantic quick changes… you become part of a community that really matters.

I’ve been a member of STCo for 23 years, joining in 2002, after being introduced by my now husband, Brian. I have always had a passion for all kinds of music, and my love of musical theatre started with Andrew Lloyd Webbers ‘Phantom of the Opera’ when it was released in 1986. Obviously I was only a bairn! My favourite musical, that I have been in is ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, performed by STCo in 2019. This is followed very closely by ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ which I took part in with Seaham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in 2013. However, my all time favourite musical has to be ‘Wicked’. Outside STCo, I’m a Civil Servant for the Department for Work and Pensions.
